Saint Gobain St Modwen Westfield Wolseley

Construction and Property

Stronger Together is an impact driven, not for profit organisation providing businesses with practical training, resources, business services and collaborative programmes to create a world where all workers are recruited responsibly and have fair work free from exploitation,

The Construction sector has been identified as high-risk by a number of bodies, including the Office of the Director of Labour Market Enforcement and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority.

The Stronger Together Construction and Property Programme was developed in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) and launched in the House of Lords in 2017. The Construction and Property Programme Sponsors are Saint-Gobain, Sky, St. Modwen, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and Wolseley.

The programme consists of:

“Becoming a Sponsor of the Stronger Together Construction Programme has enabled Saint-Gobain to benefit from their professional guidance and support in evolving our approach to tackling Modern Slavery. Stronger Together’s training workshops, practical tools and resources have equipped employees and suppliers with best practices on how Modern Slavery and Forced labour can be recognised and eliminated in the UK Construction Sector. Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland is a broad organisation and we aim to operate our businesses with the highest levels of responsibility underpinned by our Principles of Conduct and Action and our long-standing commitments to global agreements such as the UN Declaration on Human Rights and Modern Slavery. Stronger Together has been a valuable organisation to help support our evolution.”

We are proud to co-sponsor Stronger Together’s Construction Programme. As a Developer, Constructor and Operator of major retail, commercial and residential developments, the programme enables us to influence the supply chain, to become better informed and to take action against modern slavery within our sector. We are able to actively contribute to the tool kits created by the Stronger Together team, to ensure that they are relevant and effective. Our involvement as a co-sponsor confirms our own commitment to tackle modern slavery within our business and our supply chain.

Following a successful collaborative pilot, Construction and Property Sponsors are now able to commission Fast Forward Construction audits.

Suppliers going through the Fast Forward process are supported by an online ethical labour standards education programme:

  • Providing education on the latest legislation, standards, and ethical practices
  • Equipping them with practical tools and templates for implementation
  • Helping them respond to improvement actions identified through the auditing processes
  • Supporting continuous improvement

What are the Fast Forward Construction audits?

Recognising the complexities in the sector, there are two separate Fast Forward audit methodologies for Construction:

  1. Construction Due Diligence Audit (CDDA): This audit examines the labour standards management systems of a construction business and its labour supply chain. Typically, this audit will be commissioned by a main contractor on its construction sub-contractors as part of ongoing due diligence.
  1. Construction Site Audit (CSA): This audit is focussed on the worker experience. All workers on a single construction site are in scope, irrespective of which business they are contracted to work for.  This audit is usually commissioned by the main contractor or client to risk assess working conditions on a particular construction site.
